The main benefit to this hotel was its location - on the main shopping street in Rio and a bout 5 minutes walk from Ipanema beach. the adjacent bar restaurant was also very popular and made great cocktails.
We found the staff to be unhelpful and rude at times, there was building work going on for the 5 days we were staying there, no internet which was supposed to be free and they over charged for all their trips and services.
Staff were all very nice: front desks, porters, cleaning staff. Breakfast down the street was very good.
It's easy to hear noise in the next room. The elevators are very slow.
Most of the staff was friendly. The place, next to the lagoon and the beach, plenty of restaurants, 15 min taxi to center. Upgraded to a room that was nice
Noise from street. The room before upgrade was quite bad.
The location is fantastic!! 2 blocks away from Ipanema beach, and right on the main street of Ipanema, with tons of shopping and everything you need left (Leblon) and right (Copacabana).
Didn't really spend that much time in the hotel itself, didn't even actually get to stay the night, I was just in transit for the day in Rio. One thing that I noticed though, is that my room on the 3rd floor didn't seem to have soundproof windows, and as my room was directly above the hotel entrance on the main street, it could be quite noisy at night I'm sure. So if you can, request a room either on the side street, or at the back of the building (ocean side - although I do not know if you can see the actual ocean, maybe from the rooms at higher floors?).
We've just got back from 9 nights at the Mar Ipanema. It's an excellent hotel and I would recommend that anyone stay there. We were on the 3rd floor and although could hear the traffic, had no problem with it. We had the windows closed, curtains shut and aircon on. The breakfast was fantastic with a great selection to choose from. The staff were extremely helpful and on hand to give umberellas, chairs and towels for the beach, which is a 3 minute walk away. The lagoon is a 4 minute walk away. It's in a perfect location next to many fantastic restaurants. We arrived in the morning and were aware there would be a charge to check in early. The hotel will take your luggage and store it securely, so I recommend taking a change of clothes and maybe sorting yourself out at the airport so that you can dump your bags at the hotel and start exploring. They also stored our bags on our last day as we had a late flight. The hotel was very clean, the bed was very comfortable and the shower was great. There are some tours available that you can book when you get to the hotel. Although we didn't take any of them, they looked the same as ones we had prebooked and were pretty much the same price. There is free wi-fi in the room, which was fantastic to use with my iPhone. There is also a computer and printer by reception, although we never used this. Buses pass the hotel regularly including the 584, which will take you to Cosme Velho for the train up to Christ the Redeemer. The metro is about a 15 minute walk away. In short, if you’re going to Rio, you have to stay here.
wonderful breakfast and the Devassa at night was also great. Location could not be beat. Very helpful front desk.
I booked two beds in the superior double room and got one bed which we were able to change but the room with two beds was not as nice as the first room we aware shown. It didn’t feel silk the superior room but when I asked at the desk the did say it was the same level of room I had originally booked. i am still a bit skeptical about that.
The location is great. Right in the heart of Ipanema and a short walk to the beach.
We were originally put on the 9th floor but the construction directly above us, although only during the day, was so loud we had to ask to be moved as it was impossible to be in the room.
Very comfortable hotel in a great location. Ipanema much nicer than copacabana. Breakfast was the best we had in brazil. Hotel also provided beach towels and chairs which was great.
Quite expensive (especially if you extend your stay at walk in hotel rates), although the area is expensive so compared with others in that location it wasnt excessive
Good location near the best beach and best shopping, in Rio.
Outside noise at night, but I just slept with earplugs and had no problem.
The most expensive delux rooms are on the third floor where street noice is too loud. Hotel has 11 floors, top floors are standard or superior rooms. We downgraded after first night from delux room to smaller superior room to get the 11th floor. You can still hear the street noice there but not as loud as on the delux room.
The location was excellent, right on a main shopping street and close to the beach, bars and restaurants. Rooms are recently renovated or in the process of being renovated - we saw them working on other rooms on our floor as well. The staff was helpful with booking tours.
I liked the convenient location, but the street where it's located is very busy with lots of traffic noise. It didn't bother me too much though - I was too tired after busy days in Rio!
it is overpriced, when it lacks the silence i am used to.
The hotel is very close to the beach. Shopping, restaurants and bars as well as public transport possibilities are abundant.
Noise is a big issue. Most rooms look out on a very busy street with a lot of traffic. The windows are quite simple, don't shut well and certainly don't keep the noise off. Thanks to my jetlag the noise didn't keep me from sleeping, but due to the noise I found staying in my room quite uncomfortable. Breakfast is alright but I'd expect something more for this price. This hotel is clearly too expensive for what it has to offer.
Very reasonably priced for ipanema. Excellent location, new facilities, modern, clean, very helpful front desk staff. There are a few really nice and super-expensive hotels in ipanema/leblon, then there is a lot of crap. And often the crap is expensive as well. Mar ipanema is an excellent mid-range hotel and a great value
Rooms are a little small and there is no pool
This was a great option for a stay in Rio. The hotel was in the heart of Ipanema and the location gets top marks. It's not on the beach strip, but the beach strip is deserted at night. This hotel is right in the middle of a busy area with shops and restaurants. Staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The hotel is simple and clean with a good sized shower and fantastic water pressure. Having read mostly bad reviews of hotels in Rio, this one was great - we'd go back anytime.
